EGYPTIAN MUFTI PROHIBITS HAGIA SOPHIA USED AS MOSQUE
The
Great Mufti of Egypt, Shawky Alam, considers the change in the status of the
Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, from a museum to a mosque, a prohibited act. Nature
considers that historic place must function as before as a church.
"We as Muslims are ordered to preserve the church. The Prophet Muhammad always recommended in war not to destroy temples or kill monks," Alam said as quoted by Al Araby.
Alam says churches and mosques must be preserved throughout the world as
happened during Egyptian civilization. . He referred to the fatwa of his predecessor, Laith bin Saad Fakih,
which stated that the church was part of the earth's architecture in Islam. Nature's
statement in response to the decision of Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, set Hagia Sophia back as a mosque. Erdogan's decision was taken after the Turkish State Assembly overturned the 1934 cabinet's decision on the historic status on Friday (10/7).
Turkey's efforts to re-function the Hagia Sophia as a mosque have actually
been carried out since 2005. Two years ago the Turkish Constitutional Court had
rejected the proposal. Turkey's move sparked protests from a number of
countries. The United States, Greece, Russia and UNESCO protested Turkey's
decision about changing the status of the Hagia Sophia
President Erdogan ensured that the Christian icon
would remain installed in the Hagia Sophia even though the building had been
converted into a mosque. He also stated that the function of the mosque did not
make the Hagia Sophia exclusively for Muslims
Although Hagia Sofia can now be used by Muslims to worship, one of the world heritage sites
can still be visited by tourists.
(( This is Mufti Mesir about Hagia Sophia))
The conclusion of this news or article is that Turkish President Erdogan
turned the Hagia Sophia Church into a Mosque. However, it was opposed by the
Egyptian Mufti which was also opposed by Unesco and the Russian and Eastern
European Countries
